World Obesity editorial on stigma and narrative published:

Obesity prevention has emphasized the individual person and created a narrative of blame. But by treating obesity as a socially transmitted disease, we can start to turn the tide of the obesity epidemic, says Tim Lobstein.

A World Obesity editorial, published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, argues that the narrative we have about obesity and individual responsibility is making matters worse. Blaming individuals for their body weight may suit the promoters of obesogenic products and ineffective solutions, and may absolve governments of regulatory market interventions. However, such a narrative deters people from seeking medical help, and reduces the benefit they get from that help when they do seek it.
